Caustic Soda

Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)) is also known as Lye. It is a strong alkali used to increase or maintain the pH and alkalinity in drilling mud and petroleum fractions.

TCI China offers Caustic Soda in flakes, beads, or liquid form. Some industries prefer flakes or beads as it is considered safer for transportation. The liquid version is also available. The amount of Caustic Soda needed to achieve a targeted PH value may be affected by various drilling fluid products and related activities.

Caustic Soda provides many solutions to aid in drilling and fractions. It helps to solubilize acidic compounds, it assists in reducing the corrosively of water-based drilling fluids, it increases the hydration rate of dispersed clays, and in lime-based drilling muds, it reduced the solubility of lime.

Preparation and Procedures

When Caustic Soda Beads are mixed with water, there is heat generated. Always add Caustic Soda to the water and watch for bubbling and splashing.

Caustic Soda Beads will cause severe burns, and skin/eye contact is to be avoided at all times. To avoid contact, wear a protective apron, full clothing, rubber gloves, goggles, and face mask.

In the event of contact, wash immediately with water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if burning persists or if the contacted area is inflamed.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Eye/face protection – Wear chemical goggles and face shields.

Skin protection – Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves. Wear appropriate chemical resistant clothing. The use of a waterproof apron is recommended. Where contact is likely, wear chemical-resistant gloves, a chemical suit, rubber boots, and chemical safety goggles plus a face shield. Other

Respiratory protection – A NIOSH (US) or CSA (Canada) approved dust mask, or filtering facepiece is recommended for worker comfort in poorly ventilated areas. Use a particulate filter respirator for particulate concentrations exceeding the Occupational Exposure Limit.

Thermal hazards – Wear appropriate thermal protective clothing when necessary.
